Summer Contemporary Dance Intensive
Featuring Stephanie Nugent
July 20-31, 2009

Come experience an immersive two-week dance experience with Stephanie Nugent.  This two-week workshop will feature a daily two-hour technique class and an incredible afternoon session where students will work on the creative process through choreography, improvisation, and repertory.  Don’t miss out on this challenging and rewarding dance opportunity.  There will be a showing of student work at the end of the workshop.

Participants who take the entire workshop will receive 3 hours of 500R credit.  Those who wish to just take technique in the morning will receive 1 credit.  Those attending the three-hour afternoon session will receive 2 credits.

Stephanie Nugent

Stephanie Nugent is an internationally recognized choreographer, performer, and educator.  She specializes in contemporary dance technique, solo and ensemble improvisation, contact improvisation, and mentoring choreographers through the creation and production of their work. Stephanie received her B.F.A. from North Carolina School of the Arts, an M.F.A. from California State University - Long Beach and was an Associate Professor at UC Santa Barbara for six years before joining the faculty at Cal Arts.

A kinetic choreographer, Nugent’s work has been presented professionally in Italy, New York, Utah, North Carolina, Minnesota and in California by Los Angeles Dance Kaleidoscope, Malashock Dance, Sushi Visual and Performance Art among others. Her honors include awards for performance and choreography, including eight nominations in 2006 for Lester Horton Awards.

Stephanie is an accomplished performer who has worked throughout the U.S. and abroad with American dance companies and choreographers including Ririe Woodbury, Della Davidson Dance, Robin Prichard, Carmela Hermann, Eun Jung Gonzalez, Christopher Pilafian, Keith Johnson, Victoria Marks.  She has also worked internationally with Il Kyu Park (South Korea), Abelardo Geomache (Venezuela), Rejo Kela (Finland), Susanna Tambuti (Argentina), and Inbal Pinto (Israel).

As a collaborative artist, Nugent has worked with a variety of composer/performers including clarinetist Todd Feeney, jazz pianist Mike Bellar, percussion duo Skin and Bones, and since 1997 she has maintained an on-going collaborative relationship with her husband composer/violinist Robin Cox.  Recently she joined with scholar Aysha Hidayatullah (feminist and gender studies in Islam) to create Untitled Interior a dance that explores relationships between women and clothing, women and God.

All courses for the Adult Contemporary Dance Summer Intensive will be held in 185 of the Richards Building on Brigham Young University campus.

Dance Technique - 540R: 10:00 am -12:00 pm (Monday - Friday)
Creative Process - 563: 1:00 pm -4:00 pm (Monday - Friday)

Directions to the BYU Richards Building
I-15 Southbound: About 45 miles from Salt Lake City, take the University Parkway exit and turn east (left towards the mountains) at the off-ramp traffic signal. Stay on University Parkway and drive east through Orem and down the hill into Provo. Continue on University Parkway until you cross University Avenue. Turn south (right, away from the BYU Lavell Edwards Stadium on your left) on North Canyon Road. Pass the BYU Track and Field Facilities and BYU Helaman Halls on your left. Go through the light (East Bulldog Boulevard and turn left into the parking lot.  You may park in the stalls in Lot 37Y.  The Richards Building is located east (towards the mountains) just past the Student Athlete Building.

I-15 Northbound: Take the BYU/University Avenue exit off I-15. Drive north along University Avenue past Provo Center Street. Pass BYU Indoor Practice Field on your right. Turn northeast (right) on North Canyon Road, turning into the BYU parking lot on your right. You may park in the stalls in Lot 37Y.  The Richards Building is located east (towards the mountains) just past the Student Athlete Building.

Parking
You may park in Lot 37Y with a temporary parking permit, July 20–31, 2009, 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. This temporary pass will be mailed to you no later than July 13, 2009. As a guest of BYU, and to help you enjoy your stay, please remember that Disability Stalls, Dean and Official Stalls, Service Stalls, Red Curbs, etc., require special permits. Parking in any of these stalls without the proper permit will result in a parking citation. Please remember that timed stalls are enforced for the time posted.

Lodging & Food
A limited number of rooms have been reserved at the Super 8 Motel, 1555 North Canyon Road, Provo, Utah. You may reserve rooms at a special conference rate of $59.00 a night by calling 801-374-6020 by July 1st. Be sure to tell the reservation agent that you are attending the BYU Contemporary Dance Intensive.

It is approximately a one-hour drive from the Salt Lake City International Airport to Provo. We strongly encourage you to make shuttle reservations ahead of time to avoid waiting at the airport. Car rental is available at the Salt Lake City International Airport.
