Director
The BYU women’s cross country team enters their third decade under the helm of Coach Patrick Shane. Since his arrival 28 years ago, Coach Shane has turned the distance team into a team of dominance. With four Cross Country NCAA National Championships and three runner–up finishes in the past nine years, Shane has built a team that is nationally recognized as the team to beat each year. Under the reign of Shane, the Cougars have powered their way into the national spotlight, winning back–to–back national championships in 2001 and 2002 and finishing the season among the top four in the country since 1995.

Shane, Patrick

In his 28 seasons as coach of the Cougars, Shane has been named the National Cross Country Coach of the Year three times, with his most recent coming in 2002. In 1997, Shane’s women’s team became the first to win a national title. Since then, he has guided his team to four national championships–in 1997, 1999, 2000, and 2001.

With four national titles under their feet, the Cougars stand alone as the only BYU team to have four national championships.

Shane has coached 6 Olympic runners, and 26 of his athletes have combined for a total of 93 All–America citations. His cross country teams captured seven of eight High Country Athletic Conference titles, and they won the first nine Western Athletic crowns. In 1999, the Cougars scored a perfect 15 to win the inaugural Mountain West Conference Championship. Building a program basically from scratch, Shane coached the 1981 BYU team to a first–place finish at the AIAW District VII meet. The team went on to take sixth at the AIAW National Championships. BYU recorded consecutive NCAA District VII victories from 1982–1986 and won the district title seven times between 1989 and 1999.

Shane was named IAC Coach of the Year in 1981 and 1982; HCAC Coach of the Year in 1985, 1986, 1988, and 1989; District VII Coach of the Year from 1984–1986 as well as 1989, 1990, 1993, 1995, 1997, and 1998; and WAC Coach of the Year for the 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1997, and 1998 seasons. Coach Shane also earned the first–ever Coach of the Year award in the new Mountain West Conference.
